{ ٱعۡلَمُوٓاْ أَنَّمَا ٱلۡحَيَوٰةُ ٱلدُّنۡيَا لَعِبٞ وَلَهۡوٞ وَزِينَةٞ وَتَفَاخُرُۢ بَيۡنَكُمۡ وَتَكَاثُرٞ فِي ٱلۡأَمۡوَٰلِ وَٱلۡأَوۡلَٰدِۖ كَمَثَلِ غَيۡثٍ أَعۡجَبَ ٱلۡكُفَّارَ نَبَاتُهُۥ ثُمَّ يَهِيجُ فَتَرَىٰهُ مُصۡفَرّٗا ثُمَّ يَكُونُ حُطَٰمٗاۖ وَفِي ٱلۡأٓخِرَةِ عَذَابٞ شَدِيدٞ وَمَغۡفِرَةٞ مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ وَرِضۡوَٰنٞۚ وَمَا ٱلۡحَيَوٰةُ ٱلدُّنۡيَآ إِلَّا مَتَٰعُ ٱلۡغُرُورِ }
[Surah Al-Hadid (57), Ayah 20]
“Know that the life of this world is but amusement, distraction, adornment, boasting among you, and competition in wealth and children. It is like a rain whose plants please the farmers, but then it withers, turns yellow, and becomes debris. In the Hereafter, there is severe punishment, but also forgiveness and pleasure from Allah. And the worldly life is nothing but a deceiving enjoyment.”
This verse delivers a profound message about the fleeting nature of worldly life. It highlights how life progresses through phases of play, entertainment, vanity, pride, and competition—stages many chase without end. Yet Allah compares it all to a beautiful rain: it brings joy and growth for a time, but inevitably fades and crumbles. The worldly life, no matter how glittering, is temporary and often distracts from what truly matters. What follows this life—either punishment or forgiveness and divine approval—is lasting. Thus, the verse awakens the heart to re-evaluate priorities, seek the eternal over the ephemeral, and not be deceived by the illusion of permanence in this world.


Surah At-Tawbah 9:36
إِنَّ عِدَّةَ الشُّهُورِ عِندَ اللَّهِ اثْنَا عَشَرَ شَهْرًا فِي كِتَابِ اللَّهِ يَوْمَ خَلَقَ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالأَرْضَ،
مِنْهَا أَرْبَعَةٌ حُرُمٌ: ذُو الْقَعْدَةِ، وَذُو الْحِجَّةِ، وَمُحَرَّمٍ، وَرَجَبٍ.
ذَٰلِكَ الدِّينُ الْقَيِّمُ، فَلَا تَظْلِمُوا فِيهِنَّ أَنفُسَكُمْ.
وَقَاتِلُوا الْمُشْرِكِينَ كَافَّةً كَمَا يُقَاتِلُونَكُمْ كَافَّةً.
وَاعْلَمُوا أَنَّ اللَّهَ مَعَ الْمُتَّقِينَ.
“Indeed, the count of months with Allah has always been twelve since He created the heavens and the earth; of these, four are sacred—Dhu’l-Qa‘dah, Dhu’l-Hijjah, Muharram, and Rajab. This is the upright religion—so do not wrong yourselves during these sacred months. And fight the polytheists all together as they fight you all together. And know that Allah is with those who have Taqwá (God-consciousness).”
سورة الحج Surah Al-hajji
Verse 27
وَأَذِّنْ فِي النَّاسِ بِالْحَجِّ يَأْتُوكَ رِجَالًا وَعَلَىٰ كُلِّ ضَامِرٍ يَأْتِينَ مِن كُلِّ فَجٍّ عَمِيقٍ
“And proclaim to the people the Hajj [pilgrimage], for they will come to you on foot and on every lean camel—emaciated by distance—emerging from every deep, remote pass,” drawing pilgrims from all corners of the earth and highlighting the universal, enduring summons of Abraham’s legacy.
Verse 28
لِيَشْهَدُوا۟ مَنَـٰفِعَ لَهُمْ وَيَذْكُرُوا۟ اسْمَ ٱللَّهِ فِيۤ أَيَّامٍ مَّعْلُومَـٰتٍ عَلَىٰ مَا رَزَقَهُم مِّنۢ بَهِيمَةِ ٱلْأَنْعَـٰمِ ۖ فَكُلُوا۟ مِنْهَا وَأَطْعِمُوا۟ ٱلْبَائِسَ ٱلْفَقِيرَ
“So that they may witness benefits—meat, milk, transport—from the sacrificial livestock, invoke Allah’s name during the appointed days over what He has provided, then eat thereof and share generously with the poor and needy,” underscoring both spiritual remembrance and social solidarity.
Verse 29
ثُمَّ لِيَقْضُوا۟ تَفَثَهُمْ وَلْيُوفُوا۟ نُذُورَهُمْ وَلْيَطَّوَّفُوا۟ بِٱلْبَيْتِ ٱلْعَتِيقِ
“Then let them complete their purification rites—shaving or trimming hair—fulfill all their vows, and circumambulate the Ancient House,” marking the sequential completion of Hajj rituals from sacrifice to tawāf around the Ka‘bah.
Verse 30
ذَ ٰلِكَۖ وَمَن يُعَظِّمْ حُرُمَـٰتِ ٱللَّهِ فَهُوَ خَيْرٌ لَّهُۥ عِندَ رَبِّهِۦۗ وَأُحِلَّتْ لَكُمُ الْأَنْعَـٰمُ إِلَّا مَا يُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْكُمْۖ فَٱجْتَنِبُوا۟ الرِّجْسَ مِنَ الْأَوْثَـٰنِ وَٱجْتَنِبُوا۟ قَوْلَ الزُّورِ
“That is so, and whoever reveres Allah’s sacred ordinances—His forbidden and prescribed limits—finds the best outcome with his Lord; grazing livestock have been made lawful to you except what is specifically banned, so avoid the impurity of idols and refrain from false speech,” tying ethical conduct directly to the sanctity of pilgrimage.
Verse 31
حُنَفَاءَ لِلَّهِ غَيْرَ مُشْرِكِينَ بِهِۦۚ وَمَن يُشْرِكْ بِٱللَّهِ فَكَأَنَّمَا خَرَّ مِنَ ٱلسَّمَاۤءِ فَتَخْطَفُهُ ٱلطَّيْرُ أَوْ تَهْوِى بِهِ ٱلرِّيحُ فِى مَكَانٍ سَحِيقٍ
“Inclining solely to Allah and not associating partners; for whoever commits shirk (idolatry), it is as though he had fallen from the sky and been snatched by birds or driven by the wind into a far-off place,” graphically illustrating the ruinous consequences of deviating from pure monotheism.
Verse 32
ذَ ٰلِكَۖ وَمَن يُعَظِّمْ شَعَائِرَ ٱللَّهِ فَإِنَّهَا مِن تَّقْوَى ٱلْقُلُوبِ
“That is so, and whoever honors Allah’s symbols—stones, garments, animals, rites—does so from true piety of the heart,” reminding us that reverence for external rites flows from inner God-consciousness (taqwá).
Verse 33
لَكُمْ فِيهَا مَنَافِعُ إِلَىٰ أَجَلٍ مُّسَمًّى ثُمَّ مَحِلُّهَا إِلَى الْبَيْتِ الْعَتِيقِ
“For you, the sacrificial animals serve practical benefits until a stipulated time—milk, wool, transport—after which their place of sacrifice is the Ancient House,” merging utilitarian provision with devotional offering at the Ka‘bah.
Verse 34
وَلِكُلِّ أُمَّةٍ جَعَلْنَا مَنسَكًا لِيَذْكُرُوا۟ اسْمَ ٱللَّهِ عَلَىٰ مَا رَزَقَهُم مِّنۢ بَهِيمَةِ ٱلْأَنْعَـٰمِۗ فَإِلَـٰهُكُمْ إِلَـٰهٌ وَٰحِدٌ فَلَهُۥ أَسْلِمُوا۟ۗ وَبَشِّرِ ٱلْمُخْبِتِينَ
“And for every community We appointed a rite—sacrifice—so they may mention Allah’s name over what He has provided; your God is one God, so to Him submit, and give glad tidings to those who humble themselves before their Lord,” affirming both the universality of sacrifice and the call to pure submission.
Verse 35
ٱلَّذِينَ إِذَا ذُكِرَ ٱللَّهُ وَجِلَتْ قُلُوبُهُمْ وَٱلصَّابِرِينَ عَلَىٰ مَا أَصَابَهُمْ وَٱلْمُقِيمِي ٱلصَّلَوٰةِ وَمِمَّا رَزَقْنَـٰهُمْ يُنفِقُونَ
“[Glad tidings for] those whose hearts tremble when Allah is mentioned, who are patient over trials, who establish prayer, and who spend from what We have provided them,” defining the moral-spiritual profile of true believers beyond mere ritual performance.
Verse 36
وَالْبُدْنَ جَعَلْنَـٰهَا لَكُم مِّن شَعَائِرِ ٱللَّهِ لَكُمْ فِيهَا خَيْرٌۖ فَٱذْكُرُوا۟ اسْمَ ٱللَّهِ عَلَيْهَا صَوَاۤفَّۖ فَإِذَا وَجَبَتْ جُنُوبُهَا فَكُلُوا۟ مِنْهَا وَأَطْعِمُوا۟ ٱلْقَانِعَ وَٱلْمُعۡتَرَّۚ كَذَ ٰلِكَ سَخَّرۡنَـٰهَا لَكُمۡ لَعَلَّكُمۡ تَشۡكُرُونَ
“And the camels and cattle We appointed as symbols of Allah; therein is good for you, so invoke Allah’s name over them when they stand in line for sacrifice, then when their sides are fallen, eat from them and feed both the contented and the needy—thus have We subjected them so that you may be grateful,” highlighting both remembrance and reciprocity.
Verse 37
لَن يَنَالَ ٱللَّهَ لُحُومُهَا وَلَا دِمَاؤُهَا وَلَـٰكِن يَنَالُهُ ٱلتَّقْوَىٰ مِنكُمْۚ كَذَ ٰلِكَ سَخَّرَهَا لَكُمۡ لِتُكَبِّرُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ عَلَىٰ مَا هَدَاكُمۡۗ وَبَشِّرِ ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ
“Their flesh and blood do not reach Allah, but your piety reaches Him; thus He has subjected them for you so that you may magnify Allah for guiding you—and give glad tidings to the doers of good,” reminding us that the essence of sacrifice is taqwá, not the physical act itself.
